Why Do I Keep Drinking After Saying "Never Again"? Meet FAB

binge drinking cycle changing your relationship with alcohol drink less fading affect bias gray area drinking how to drink less i'll never drink again weekend binge drinking why do i drink every weekend why do i keep drinking Oct 13, 2026

Monday: I am NEVER doing this again.

Friday: It really wasn't that bad. I'll just have one.

Same week. Same you. Both completely sincere.

So which one is lying?

Neither. There's a third party in your head, and she's been editing the story.

Why do I keep drinking after promising myself "never again"?

Here's what I know after living this cycle for years: it isn't a lack of caring, and it isn't a lack of willpower. You meant Monday's promise. Every single time.

There's a reason it doesn't last until the weekend. It has a name: Fading Affect Bias, or FAB.

FAB also happens to be the friend who makes every Friday sound fabulous. (Yes, that's on purpose.)

Most of the time, she's on your side. When it comes to alcohol? She's a terrible influence.

What FAB quietly edits out by Friday

By Friday, she has quietly deleted:

  • The 3 a.m. anxiety. The lost Sunday.
  • The brain fog.
  • The texts you had to check.
  • The promise you made on Monday.

And what does she leave in?

The dinner. The laughs. The first drink.

Then she hands you the highlight reel and says, "See? It's fine."

No wonder Friday You buys it.

You've never made a Friday decision from the full story. Only from the highlight reel. And you never even knew FAB was the editor.

Is this you?

  • You swear off drinking on Monday and mean it, and by Thursday you're planning the weekend.
  • You can't quite remember how bad the hangover or the anxiety felt.
  • You're saying "I'll just have one" while part of you already knows how the night usually goes.
  • You spend the early part of the week making up for it: eating better, working out, getting back on track.
  • You've made the same promise so many times that you've started to doubt yourself.

If you nodded at even two of those, you're in good company. If you want to see how common this is, read Why More Women Are Binge Drinking (And Why It's Not Your Fault),or It Even Hurts to Smile.

So how does she do it, and how do you catch her?

That's the part I can't squeeze into a blog post. I put all of it into a free guide, Why You Keep Starting Over Every Monday, written for my fellow weekend binge drinkers.

Inside, you'll find out:

  • What FAB really is, and why she works so well, every single time
  • How she keeps the weekend drinking cycle going
  • Three practical ways to catch her in the act and keep Monday's truth from disappearing by Friday

It's completely free. No six-week commitment. No decision about forever. Just the ohhh, THAT'S why moment.
