It always started with “I’ll just have one glass…”

A quick toast at the office party. Champagne on New Year’s Eve. Spiked cider at the holiday open house.

You didn’t plan to overdo it — you never do. But somehow, every year, December turns into a blur of late nights, fuzzy mornings, and that same old promise: I’ll deal with this in January.

And deep down, you know the truth — “January You” is tired of cleaning up the mess.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. The holiday season is full of triggers: stacked events, high expectations, and an endless stream of reasons to pour another round.

Why We Drink More in December

People don’t just drink to cope — they drink to relax, celebrate, fit in, or to take the edge off.

But when “just one” turns into more than you wanted — and you wake up regretting it (again) — it’s worth asking:

Is this actually working for me?

The answer for many of my coaching clients — men and women alike — is: no. Not anymore.

Gray-Area Drinking: More Common Than You Think

You don’t have to hit rock bottom to want change.

Most of the people I coach fall into something called gray-area drinking — that uncomfortable middle space between social drinking and dependency.

You might be a gray-area drinker if:

  • You drink more than you planned… often

  • You think about drinking (or not drinking) a lot

  • You care deeply about your health and know this isn’t helping

  • You feel a disconnect between your values and your habits

Recognizing this isn’t failure. It’s self-awareness.
And it’s the starting point for real, lasting change.

You Can Do the Holidays Differently

Drinking less doesn’t have to mean missing out.

You don’t have to make dramatic announcements or quit forever. You just have to start paying attention to what’s really going on — and what you actually want to feel this season.

If you're ready to enjoy the holidays without hangovers, shame spirals, or broken promises to yourself, I've got tools to help — and you can hear them all in Episode 44 of my podcast.
